The fourth member of the Gulfstream family line, the G-IV offers new advancements lacking in former aircraft. One of the most significant improvements is the change of engines from the Rolls-Royce Spey to the Rolls-Royce Tay Mk 611-8. The successful intercontinental-range business jet has become a prototype for later models. While the G-IV’s maximum takeoff weight increased from predecessors, the G-IVSP (single-pilot modification) is even greater.

Two Rolls-Royce Mk 611-8 engines provide 13,850 lbs of thrust each with an 8,000 hour inspection interval. These upgraded engines are responsible for a 15% increase in fuel economy and decreased noise levels.

The 6-screen, Honeywell SPZ-8000 color EFIS avionics suite is an additional improvement found in the GIV-SP’s cockpit, including Collins radios, FMS and dual Honeywell laser inertial reference systems, with optional Triple laser INS, dual FMS and an air-to-ground telephone.

The G-IV/G-IVSP are the first in the Gulfstream family to employ Goodyear Aerospace’s brake-by-wire system and a Dowty fail-passive steer-by-wire system, making pilot maneuverability easier. Takeoff weight is 1,400 additional pounds than the G-IV, at 74,600 pounds. With improved hot-and-high performance it has a high speed cruise of 476 ktas.

Compared to the G-III and G-IV the G-IV-SP has gained 4.5 feet in usable interior space while maintaining Gulfstream’s famous stand-up cabin. The cabin has a length of 45.1 feet, width of 7.3 feet, and height of 6.1 feet, accommodating up to 19 passengers comfortably. Amenities include a large galley and full-sized lavatory with a shower.

The G-IV is an ideal midsize, intercontinental-range business jet, evolved through new technologies and improvements. With a new design, upgraded engines and additional space, the G-IV offers great performance in the intercontinental class of jets; used as a model for other Gulfstream jets. The slightly higher price provides for single pilot flexibility and increased takeoff weight.
