The Cessna Aircraft Company placed its first Citation jet aircraft into service in 1972 with more than 35 million flight hours having been logged since. Fifty years after the first Citation flight, more than 7,500 Citation Private Jets have been delivered.

 

What was the first Cessna Citation Aircraft?

It started with a tiny Citation I prototype flight in September 1969, and produced until 1985, evolving into the Citation II/Bravo, then the Citation V / Ultra / Encore and then the CitationJet. The stand-up cabin Citation III / VI / VII was first delivered in 1983, and its fuselage reused in the Citation X / X+, later the Excel along with the Sovereign. The Mustang Very Light Jet started deliveries in 2006, while the flat floor fuselage Latitude started deliveries in 2015.

Cessna 500 Citation I
is a small business jet announced by Cessna in October 1968 and is the basis of the Citation family. The Fanjet 500 prototype first flew in September 1969 and was certified as the Citation in September 1971, then upgraded in 1976 as the Citation I and a single pilot variant after 689 deliveries. Powered by JT15D turbofan engines, the straight wing aircraft later evolved into the Citation II/Bravo.

Citation II/Bravo
the Model 550 series of Citation jets are light corporate jets built by Cessna. Stretched from the Citation I, it was announced in September 1976, first flew in January 1977 and certified in March 1978. The II/SP is a single pilot version, the improved S/II first flew in February 1984 and the Citation Bravo upgraded with new avionics and Pratt & Whitney PW530A turbofans in April 1995, and all together 1,184 aircraft were delivered.

Citation III/VI/VII
the Model 650 is a Cessna business jet with a 2,350 nm range announced in October 1976 at the NBAA convention, making its maiden flight in May 1979, certification in April 1982 and deliveries from 1983 to 1992.  An all new design, it had a 312 sq ft swept wing for a 22,000 lb MTOW, a T-tail and two 3,650–4,080 lbf  TFE731 turbofan engines. Its fuselage cross section and cockpit were kept in the later Citation X, Citation Excel and Citation Sovereign.

Citation V/Ultra/Encore
the Model 560 stretched from the Citation II with a prototype flying in August 1987, certified in December 1988 with deliveries between April 1987 til 2011 with 774 units delivered. The upgraded Citation Ultra was announced in September 1993, the Citation Encore upgraded with PW535 turbofans was announced in 1998.

Citation Jet
the Model 525 are light business jets launched in October 1989, its first flight in April 1991, FAA certification awarded in October 1992 and first delivery in March 1993. By June 2017, 2,000 of all variants have been delivered. Powered by two 1,900 lbf Williams FJ44 engines, it uses the Citation II’s forward fuselage with a new carry-through section, straight wing and T-tail. The basic model was updated with the CJ / CJ1 / M2 names, the fuselage stretched in the CJ2 / CJ2+ delivered since 2000, and stretched even further in the CJ3 / CJ3+ delivered from December 2004 and the CJ4 delivered since 2010.

Citation X/X+
the Model 750 with 3,460 nmi range is part of the Citation family, announced at the October 1990 NBAA convention, its maiden flight in December 1993, certification in June 1996 and first deliveries in July 1996. The updated Citation X+ was offered from 2012 with a 14 in cabin stretch and upgraded systems. Keeping the Citation III fuselage cross section, it has a new 37° swept wing with an area of 527 ft² for a fast Mach 0.935 MMo and 36,600 lb MTOW, a T-tail and two 7,034 lbf AE3007 turbofan engines. After 338 deliveries production ended in 2018.

Excel/XLS/XLS+
the Model 560XL midsize business jet is also part of the Citation Family. Announced in October 1994, first flying in February 1996, certified in April 1998 with over 900 having been delivered. The 20,200 lb MTOW jet is powered by two 3,650–4,080 lbf PW500 turbofan engines, with the Citation V (560) cruciform tail and unswept supercritical wing of 370 sq ft, and the Citation X stand-up cabin slightly shortened. The XLS 2004 update had upgraded engines and a glass cockpit and the 2008 XLS+ had upgraded engines and a revised nose.

Sovereign
Model 680 is a 3,200 nmi range business jet developed as part of the Citation family. The Citation Excel fuselage was stretched and joined with an all-new, larger wing and more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306C engines for increased maximum takeoff weight. Announced at the 1998 NBAA convention, it made its maiden flight in February 2002, certification was awarded in June 2004 with deliveries beginning in September 2004. The improved Sovereign+ was announced at the October 2012 NBAA for a first flight in April 2012 and deliveries in December, with added winglets and an improved flight deck and engines.

Mustang
Model 510 is a very light jet launched at the 2002 NBAA convention, first flying in April 2005, receiving its FAA type certification in September 2006 with deliveries in November 2006 and a total of 479 aircraft having been built. The 8,645 lb MTOW jet is powered by two 1,460 lbf P&WC PW615F turbofan engines reaching 340 kn with a range of 1,167 nm.

Latitude
680A is a 2,700 nm range business jet announced at the 2011 NBAA convention, first flight in  February 2014, FAA certified in June and deliveries begun in August 2014. It kept the Model 680 Sovereign wing, twin P&WC PW306D turbofan engines and cruciform tail, but its clean sheet stand-up circular fuselage having a flat floor.
